Factory workers during that time were also in many ways acting as machines or devices themselves, becoming one with their mechanized cohorts, unsung and unseen. “Device” SERIES by FLuX
In this series FLuX uses his signature technique of heightened realism in oils to juxtapose stark black and white imagery with a brightly colored visual language, exploring our complex early relationships with machines & devices.
For this 3 part series, FLuX sourced rights-free photographs of factory workers at the turn of the century on the Library of Congress’ website. He then used procreate to hand draw detailed 2D elements over the photograph, and in photoshop digitally painted those 2D elements. Finally, he recreated each study in a final painting completely in oils.
